ABOUT THE WORK
My current work is a form of relief collage. The collages begin with the molded forms that are the leftovers of mass consumer packaging. Within these rigid plastic or cardboard worlds, I am exploring the non-objective qualities of color, texture, and space. The pieces of color are torn from discarded magazines and catalogues, completing a kind of artistic recycling paradigm.
How do we transform what we cast away? My work is an effort to animate discards and imbue them with life - to reclaim and re-contextualize mundane synthetic leftovers into art that is accessible, joyful, whimsical, and surprising. I want the work to counter some of the ugliness and depersonalization of a culture that places a high value on acquiring material possessions while mindlessly producing waste.
